“What!?” I said, shocked by this newest revelation. “Where? Is she ok? What the hell happened?”

“She’s okay,” Joey assured me, “but she’s pretty shaken up.”

“I bet,” I said, thinking I’d just developed a newfound respect for the plucky woman. “Do you know any of the details?”

“Only that Karen had just come into the house when she heard something in the kitchen. She didn’t think much of it until a man, dressed in all black, popped out. When he saw her, he chased her up the stairs. Thinking quickly, she locked herself in the bedroom and called the cops.”

I could tell there was more. “And,” I pressed, hugging my arms across my chest, desperate to hear the rest.

“And she wasn’t the only one in the house when this happened. Karen heard another loud struggle in the room across from hers as she was calling the cops. It was Gerald, Ryan. Karen said it sounded like he was fighting off his attacker. When the cops arrived, they couldn’t find the man anywhere.”

“Jesus,” I whispered, my head spinning. No one connected to Bunny was safe anymore. “Doctor Ward,” I stated frantically, “he went home early. He was tired and didn’t want to stay out late on account of being sick.” And I’d almost caught a ride home with him. That realization was enough to make a girl think twice about carpooling. “Has anyone seen him?”

“He’s fine. He showed up minutes after the cops. It seemed he’d stopped off at the pharmacy after dinner to pick up some cold and flu supplies.”

I breathed a sigh of relief. “Thank God,” I said, grateful that another person had escaped danger. But poor Gerald. “Was there any sign of,” I paused, trying to be tactful, “of blood when the cops arrived.”

“That’s the weird thing,” Joey explained, “there wasn’t a single scrap of evidence that would even support what Karen claimed. If what had happened to us at the hayride hadn’t been reported, Officer Martin told me the cops on scene would have chalked it up to a woman looking for a little attention.”

Well, that was about the most sexist thing I’d ever heard! “I can’t believe this! What the hell is going on here, Joey?”

“I don’t know,” he answered, shaking his head, “but I promise you one thing, Ryan. I won’t rest until I find out.”
